This could’ve really been an email

Meetings come in all kinds of flavours. Some are to disperse information in a uniform manner. Some are to collect information. Some are to deliver bad news, while others are celebrations. Meetings aren’t inherently bad, however some folks give meetings a bad rep.

I truly believe meetings can be productivity killers. I imagine they aren’t meant to be, but when you find that you spend more time in meetings than doing productive work, you are definitely not benefiting from the meetings. Don’t get me wrong there are benefits to having meetings:

  • Setting strategies
  • Deciphering business requirements
  • Resolving issues, complaints and conflicts
  • Distribution of information to large groups

There are many other good reasons for meetings. But when you get to a stage when you are micromanaging by meetings, all those good reasons go away.

Employees usually have objectives or targets or goals they need to meet. And generally they need guidelines within which to work. They need to be aware of strategic objectives. They need guidance on strategies. They need guidance on their performance. In some instances a meeting to discuss any of the above is appropriate. But when the meetings occupy a…
