Looking forward to my first day

It’s been a while since I’ve had a first day at a job. It’s been over 14 years. I’m anxious about it but not as much as I thought I would be. I actually feel very ready.

You see, on my first first day I was inexperienced. I had no idea what to expect. I had recently graduated from university and was trying to find my way. I had never had a full time, permanent job before so I was going in blind. I had summer jobs but they don’t always represent real world work life. You are treated as temporary because you are. You are treated like a child because you’re a student. You aren’t really valued so you’re stuck with menial tasks. I figured my full time job wouldn’t be like that but I didn’t know what it would really be like.

I was unsure of what I wanted. I had a degree but I didn’t have a concretely defined career path. I hoped the job I choose would expose me to enough so that I could make a choice. I hoped that I would learn enough of the world to decide where I fit into it. When I started my first job I was unsure of who I was. There are parts of you that you know to be unshakable but then there are other parts that require time and experience to develop. I didn’t know I could be a leader. I didn’t know I learn in the ways I did. I didn’t know I could act in the ways I did.
