Note to self: Don’t worry about what others are doing

Have you ever had a moment where you second guess yourself? Who am I kidding? Of course you have. It seems like par for the course of life.

There are more times than I care to share, that I have felt like I wasn’t good enough. There are times I think to myself that people are so much better at things than I am. And they may very well be, but that shouldn’t be my concern should it? There are times I see people doing things similar to things I want to do. They have and are executing ideas similar to mine. And I feel like a failure. I feel stupid. I feel left behind. I feel like I am wasting my time … and life.

And I absolutely hate it. Logically, I know I shouldn’t be thinking the way that I do. I shouldn’t be worried about what other people are doing or how they are doing it. What I should focus on is me and what I can do. My focus should be on what I bring to the table — my talents, experience, expertise. I should focus on me.

I will admit that it is hard to do because sometimes it feels like I don’t have anything to offer, but that’s something (else) I need to work on. Everyone’s perspective is unique. Everyone has something to offer and we shouldn’t count ourselves out.

Dearest Self,

I know sometimes you feel like “everyone” is doing that thing you are considering doing. I know you feel like you dont do enough. I know feel like you are running out of time. But I want to reassure you that you aren’t.

Shift your focus to yourself and start doing the things you want to do. I know you think that because others are doing it already that you can’t. But that’s absurd. The number of people doing a thing, doesn’t mean there is no space or opportunity for you to do it. You can still try.

I want to remind you of an image you saw many moons ago, that showed a well stocked bread aisle in a supermarket. The gist of the image was that even with many brands of bread, there is still demand. Think about it — there’s more than just white bread. There’s wheat bread, gluten free bread, cinnamon raisin bread, dinner rolls, etc. With the myriad of options available, not only do new options pop up all the time but bakeries are still a thing! If you aren’t convinced by the bread example, I’ll give you an even better one — water. Look how many brands of water there are. Consider that the product is pretty much the exact same across the board. The difference is that each brand puts there spin on it.

You have to do the same. Take action and do the things you want to do. Don’t worry about who is doing it. Don’t worry about their edge. Do what you want to do and remember that no one can do things the way you would. This is your edge. No one has your spirit or perspective, so do it. Do the thing. Take the risk. Make the effort. You won’t know the outcome until you try. Don’t let fear or competition stop you and rob you of success (or the lessons from failure).
